Shortly after Christmas in 2017, a nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center administered the wrong medication. As a result, the patient died. The resulting trial and conviction has driven patient safety to the forefront of conversations across the country.
Meanwhile, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth is developing innovative curricula to address what TCOM Dean Filipetto calls the "epidemic" of preventable harm. In 2020, TCOM became the only medical school in the world to require its students to take the internationally recognized Certified Professional in Patient Safety exam.
